Overview: 

The course focuses on the research-based principles and practices for language, communication and literacy development of young children. Students are expected to acquire a high level of practical knowledge and skills to promote language and literacy in early childhood education, guided by relevant curriculum documents. Specifically, students are introduced to strategies and techniques for designing a rich language and literacy environment, and for providing authentic learning experiences appropriate for young children of diverse needs and learning styles. Topics include emergent and multiple illiteracies, bi- and multi-lingualism, selection of children’s literature and the use of media, the integration of literacy concepts throughout the classroom environment, inclusive practices, documentation procedures, assessment techniques and collaboration with family and community.
